Mt. Veeder

Archer & Byrd

Named to honor Mt. Veeder conservationists Drs. Archer Taylor and Hasseltine Byrd who turned 399 acres of nearby redwoods into a permanent preserve.

This vineyard is a prototypically Mt. Veeder complete with south-facing slope and broken blue-shale soils. The combination of non-intervention farming and ancient Pacific Ocean remnants amplifies the terroir pushing forward the signature Mt. Veeder violet and iris aromas that support the taut, vivid, and up-righted mouthfeel. Of the four wines, this one is the most chiseled and cool-climate like. This lean structure properly frames the blue fruit, pomegranate, bay laurel, and fine herb flavors.

  • 98 points | “the wine opens with dusty rose and a distinct mountain-mineral character, layered with dark cassis and black cherry, lightly seasoned with smoked sea salt"

Decanter | “Gorgeously fragrant, the wine opens with dusty rose and a distinct mountain-mineral character, layered with dark cassis and black cherry, lightly seasoned with smoked sea salt. It is charged with coiled intensity, shaped by subtly chewy, phenolically grippy tannins that carry immense latent energy. These tannins create a captivating texture, while juicy, dark berry fruit glides gracefully across the palate. Sourced from a dry-farmed, organically grown, no-till vineyard atop blue shale and ancient seabed soils on Mount Veeder, the wine honours conservationists Drs Archer Taylor and Hasseltine Byrd, who preserved 161 hectares of neighbouring redwood forest. With over-wintering cattle and dedicated wildlife corridors, the site stands as a model of regenerative farming under the stewardship of Tomas Comme Farming.” Pilcrow, Archer & Byrd, Mt. • 91+ points | "hints of crushed stone, dried herbs and dusty earth with a core of cherry fruit"

Robert Parker Wine Advocate | “From a south-facing site on Mount Veeder, Pilcrow's 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Archer & Byrd combines hints of crushed stone, dried herbs and dusty earth with a core of cherry fruit. This medium-bodied wine (labeled at 12.9% alcohol) is tart and intense, even racy in character, with a long, vibrant and tangy finish.” May 07, 2026

  • 91 points | "Tart cherries and hints of bay leaf dominate the nose"

Robert Parker Wine Advocate | “Tart cherries and hints of bay leaf dominate the nose of Pilcrow's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Archer & Byrd, which comes from a site on Mount Veeder. Just medium-bodied, it's not overly tannic but shows ample wiry intensity and a long, mouthwatering finish.” May 07, 2026
